Down Syndrome, or Trisomy 21, is a condition where an individual has an extra chromosome out of the typical 46. This genetic variation affects how a baby’s body develops and functions. Approximately 1 in every 800 babies is born with Down Syndrome. It occurs naturally and is not caused by any specific factor. Individuals with Down Syndrome may experience varying degrees of intellectual and physical disabilities, along with associated medical issues

PDSA provides a range of services through its rehabilitation centers, including:

  • Physiotherapy: Enhancing mobility, reducing pain, and restoring physical function through targeted exercises and manual therapy.

  • Psychotherapy: Addressing emotional, mental, and behavioral challenges by helping individuals explore their thoughts and feelings to develop healthier coping strategies.

  • Speech Therapy: Improving communication skills by addressing speech, language, and swallowing difficulties.

  • Occupational Therapy: Assisting individuals in developing skills for daily living and work through therapeutic activities that enhance independence and functionality.

  • Non-Formal Education: Providing flexible learning opportunities to develop skills and knowledge outside the traditional classroom setting.

  • Day Care Facilities: Offering accommodation and care in a safe and supportive environment.

PDSA operates two rehabilitation centers in Karachi:

  • DEPD-PDSA Rehabilitation Center: Located in Gulshan-e-Hadeed.

  • PDSA Rehabilitation Center: Situated in Gulistan-e-Johar.

These centers cater to children with intellectual disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and other learning disabilities, aged 4 to 17 years.

PDSA operates Youth Skill Development Centers that focus on equipping young individuals with Down Syndrome and other disabilities with essential skills for independent living and meaningful employment. Through vocational training, life skills education, and tailored programs, these centers empower youth to become active contributors to society while fostering their confidence and self-reliance.

October is observed as Down Syndrome Awareness Month. During this month, PDSA organizes various events and activities to raise awareness about Down Syndrome, celebrate the abilities and achievements of individuals with Down Syndrome, and promote inclusivity and acceptance in society.
